With the upgrade to EE4.2, I have just discovered that many of my questions have been truncated, due to what looks to be character or word limits. This is causing serious problems — please fix! Thank you. |
Hello, Could you please share a link to an event so I can take a look at this? Also, please provide some specific examples of the questions that you are seeing this issue with. — |
This is a gigantic mess, Lorenzo, not to mention extremely time-consuming to deal with! Considering that the question part of this registration form is a major part of EE4.2 upgrade, it is very discouraging and makes me wonder if these kinds of issues will occur with future upgrades. In addition to questions being truncated, your update has duplicate system questions, had messed up the order of questions within each group, and has questions that don’t show up even though they’re checked off and the Group name and description are showing. To see at least some of the problems from the front end (the rest you can only see from the dashboard), please go to http://travelgreenest.com/retreats/events/knowing-the-wilds/ and go through the process of registering. • Duplicate questions (fortunately don’t show when one of them is unchecked): • Questions that don’t show under “Personal Information” on the back end: • Truncated questions (I re-enter the entire text, save, and it gets cut off again): • Questions not truncated on the back end, but not appearing on registration form (although checked in the Question Group): • Question both truncated on the back end and not appearing on registration form: • Question truncated and not showing on registration form, then disappeared from back end; next recreated and appearing on the back end list of questions when saved, but disappears and causes error page when checked and saved for a question group: |
That last question got cut in my reply above! The way I enter it exactly is, “Do you agree to the <b>Travel Greenest Trip Terms and Conditions?</b>” The way it appears on the question list is “Do you agree to the Tra”. |
Are you guys going to respond on this issue this morning? Without it getting fixed, I am totally stuck and screwed, can’t sell any tickets! At the very least, I need your help this morning to downgrade to EE4.1.11 until you get it fixed. |
I see you guys are responding to other customers’ issues this morning, but not this one. Would you at least let me know that you’re looking into it, please? |
Hi, We are looking into the issue with the developers. We will update you as soon as we can. |
Thank you, Seth! |
It looks like there was a change made to the data migration scripts that wasn’t carried over between versions somehow. The developers are working on a fix and we should have a hotfix released shortly. |
Thanks, Seth. Hotfix released shortly as in, today, you mean? |
Hi Scott, It should be later today, *update* 4.2.2 has been released. If you can restore your database to a backup made before doing the update, the longer questions will automatically migrate with this version. If no backup was made, then after updating you can manually update the truncated questions.
Thanks Josh, too much work to go back to a backup at this point, so I’ll have to manually fix. I’m not sure what to do with this zip file. I’ve ftp’d to the plugins folder. Do I delete the EE folder before extracting this? |
You’ll want to unzip the zip file before uploading if you go the FTP route. Alternatively you can follow the documentation on how to do a manual update here: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/updating-event-espresso/#update_manually |
Is this an upgrade or downgrade? The entire questions formatting is back to the old version, with drag and drop gone from the Question Groups, etc. |
Also, duplicate, non-trashable system questions remain. |
EE 4.2.2 has been officially released and includes the fix. |
If it’s not any different than what you had me just upload earlier, it’s not entirely fixed, and there are new issues. |
What are the new issues? — |
This is a lot different from the fix I was pointed to and had installed earlier today. Have to reconfigure once again. |
Dates got changed for when tickets are available and expire. I change them back to the correct dates and hit update. The expieration dates go back to the same wrong dates as before. I change them back and hit update and they go back again to the wrong dates. Happens multiple times. So now I can’t sell because the current date for tickets has expired. Duplicate, untrashable system questions city and zip remain. |
This is such a frustrating, incredible mess! I don’t know where your QA is, but not paying attention. I thought I’d delete the tickets whose expiration dates won’t change, but now there’s a lock on one even though there’s no registrations for it, and again I try to change the expiration date and again it goes back to the same as the on-sale date. I create a new ticket with the on-sale and expiration dates I want, and after updating, the expiration date reverts to the on-sale date. Again, I can’t get a ticket to go live on-sale for now. Again, I can’t change any tickets’ end dates. |
Can we take a look at your system to see if we can pinpoint the issues? Please send WordPress admin level log in credentials via this form: |
Still waiting ion your login credentials, but I just wanted to note a few things from your report above. 1) It sounds to me like the migration between 4.1 and 4.2 got messed up somehow on your website. Did you notice any errors during the migration? 2) The extra system questions can be removed from within the database. 3) I am not sure what the issue is with the dates. Have you made any changes to the WordPress date and time settings? What are the current WordPress date and time settings? |
Login credentials sent. 1) No errors noticed during upgrade. But I was given a temp upgrade this afternoon before the published one, I used that and had other issues. The only way I could then upgrade to your EE4.2.2 was to do it manually. 2) Bizarre. 3) Date and Time Settings not changed. UTC-8 |
Hi, I wanted to let you know that we did receive your information. — |
Hi Scott, I am noticing several issues (such as missing data) with your install of Event Espresso. It seems you have tried migrating your data from another install, as mentioned in this thread: Just wondering. Did the site you migrated from have Event Espresso 3.1 installed, then you upgraded to Event Espresso 4.1? I think the site is severely corrupted. Would it be possible to start over with a fresh install of Event Espresso 4.1 on this site? |
This site never had EE3 on it, only EE4. If the site is now corrupted, it’s entirely because of EE, EE4, specifically! The issues described here didn’t occur until I upgraded from 4.11.1 to 4.2. I did exactly as all your support staff said to do. What to do now? |
Okay, the site I was asking about having EE3 installed was the one where you first migrated from, as mentioned in this thread from April 7: I know this is very frustrating. I am just trying to figure out what exactly happened here. This seems like a fairly isolated issue, because we have had ~50 sites update from 4.1 to 4.2 and only this one report everything getting messed up in the process or migrating the data. Anything could have happened, such as a lost connection or the server became unresponsive during the migration process. That is why we highly recommend backing up the database before updating and/or performing the data migration between updates. Tickets Super Early Bird Registration (#1) – this can’t be deleted, because it looks like people have already registered for this ticket. Super Early Bird Registration (#2) – I was able to change the dates on that ticket. Early Bird Registration – I was able to change the date on that ticket. Floating The Wilds – I was able to change the date on that ticket, but noticed that the “Goes on Sale” date was the same date as the “Sell Until” date. So I set the “Goes on Sale” date to 2014-04-23. Is it possible that you were trying to set the “Sell Until” date to a date before the “Goes on Sale” date? If so, the system won’t let that happen and will revert the “Sell Until” to the same date and the “Goes on Sale” date. Here is a screenshot of the tickets before my changes: and after my changes: Can you please test these again to see if you have any trouble updating these fields? Duplicate System Questions I have also noticed that questions tabs is not paging correctly for some reason. I have issued a ticket for the developers to fix. |
Seth, As I said before, I didn’t EVER migrate my site from EE3! You’re confusing matters. I never used EE3. That thread you’re referring to had to do with not being able to upgrade between earlier versions of EE4. The corruption probably happened when I went from 4.1 this early afternoon to an interum version that I was given by one of your guys (someone on your team deleted the history of this thread, so I can’t point you to that version), because I deleted it after I went to 4.2.2. I don’t have any registrations on this event. Because I had to rebuild this site from scratch earlier, I had deleted all registrations from it and have waiting to be able to re-enter them manually. So the one ticket that is locked should not be locked, and besides, you should have a way for me to unlock it if I want! I just now changed the dates to what I wanted, as you can see in this screenshot here: and hit update, and this is what I got: https://www.dropbox.com/s/75x1ttw0p0b96xo/Screen%20Shot%202014-04-21%20at%2010.10.45%20PM.png So what’s the fix? |
I restored the site from a backup from 4/19, to EE4.2.0, then I upgraded to EE4.2.2. The tickets dates are no longer a problem, but many of the questions still do not appear on the front end, and one of the questions is still truncated and bringing me to an error page when I click on it. |
Hi there, That’s likely from updating to ee4.2.0. instead of updating to ee4.2.0, it would be better to go right from 4.1.x to 4.2.2. ee4.2.0 sets the shorter question length table definitions, which is why it’s cutting off the end of the longer questions. |
Would you please provide me with a link to the last 4.1 version so I can do that instead of having to revert to any more old data backups? |
But then again, why wouldn’t just deleting EE from my server and reinstallng 4.2.2 do the same thing? |
The database tables and data would need to be deleted as well. What Josh is saying is that you should not have installed EE 4.2.0, because it set the field sizes to to the wrong value. It would have been best to just install EE 4.2.2 right after installing the database back up. Do I still have access to your WP admin? Would you like me to manually update the field sizes? That should fix the issue with the truncated questions. Also, I wanted to note that you did have one person registered in your database for the ticket you couldn’t delete. |
Yes, you can go ahead and do that with the tables, Josh. I haven’t deleted or changed the login credentials I gave you. I don’t know how there could have still been a registrant for that one ticket — I made sure they were all deleted and then I permanently deleted them from the trash. |
I just tried the login info you sent, but it is not working anymore. Can you please re-add the account? |
That user got lost in the restore last night. Please try again, same un/pw. |
Sorry, done now. |
Hi Scott, I’m looking at your database and the question text field type is correct. After restoring your backup, you said you installed 4.2.0, upon doing that, the question fields were truncated. You should have just installed 4.2.2 and skipped 4.2.0 completely. Going forward, you can either revert to your 4.1 backup, then install 4.2.2 and run the data migration script. Or the other option is to just update the questions. |
Hi Seth, An hour and a half ago this morning, Josh told me the same thing, and because I don’t want to once again revert my entire database (including all my stored emails) to what it was a few days I asked him to send me a link to 4.1 so that I could go from that to 4.2.2 (it was when I went from 4.1 to 4.2 that the problem occurred – you had announced 4.2 was ready, so I upgraded to it!). Instead of providing that link, he offered to go in and restore the tables. That’s what I thought you were doing. I already updated the questions late last night. That helped on the back end for all but one, but on the front end, as I said, they still aren’t all displaying, and no matter how many times I delete and re-enter the one question (with a link to another page on my site), it always gets cut off, doesn’t display, and goes to an error page when I click on it to edit it in the questions area. |
Which question is getting cut-off? |
You can see it at the top of the Terms and Conditions group: “Do you agree to the Tra” Don’t forget that many of the questions that aren’t cut off aren’t showing on the front end. |
Got it. I see that the question is duplicated: Shall I delete the one that is cut-off? |
Right, I keep deleting it, and it keeps coming back. |
Okay, I am seeing the issue with this one question as well. I have pinged the developers to ask about the issue. |
I was able to move that question to the trash. |
I just now deleted the cut off one and selected the new one, which now appears in the group. But it concerns me that when I checked the box to put it in the group, I got taken to this error page: http://travelgreenest.com/retreats/?page_id=159 And as I said, a number of questions are still not showing, even though they’re checked for the groups they’re supposed to be in. (For example, Community Learning Activities) Instead of fooling around with this, shouldn’t you have me be installing 4.1.11 and then upgrading to 4.2.2? Or is 4.2.2 buggy on its own account? |
Now that I trashed that particular question, does it look like the registration form is working properly now? Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing: |
No, many questions under Photographic and Video Images, Health & Medical Information, Community Learning Activities, and Transportation are still not displaying. |
That will require you to re-install the database backup, install 4.1.11, then update to 4.2.2. You can go that route if you want, but I think we are getting closer to having this fixed. Just need to figure out why those questions are not appearing. |
Ok, then let’s do as you suggest and have you get it fixed. |
I just talked to the developers and they recommend rolling back to the 4.1.11 database backup. I will email you a link to download 4.1.11. |
Okay. I just emailed you the two most recent versions of 4.1, which are 4.1.11 and 4.1.12. Please roll back your database to the 4.1.11 install and install 4.1.11 or 4.1.12. Please do not install 4.2.0 or 4.2.2 until we can figure out what the issue is with your website. |
Ok, but why would it be an issue with my website in particular? It’s an extremely simple, small site, all centered around the event registration. Good thing it’s not any bigger or has much content at all on it. I’m not comfortable with giving you and your team unfettered, ongoing access to it. |
So far, no one else has reported the issue.
I totally agree. That’s why I asked via email if you can send us the backup you have so that we can try to reproduce the issue on one of our local test servers. |
On 4.1.12, I’m finding that when I delete a question that’s not appearing on the front end and then recreate it and add it to the group, the new question displays on the front end. |
