Just wondering where I can find details about EE3 support for PHP upgrades and if it is still be maintained for security updates etc. Any plans or timelines we should be aware of?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

EE3 is considered our legacy product and has been for a while now so it will only receive security updates reported for our code.

Eventually, we will stop supporting EE3 in favour of EE4, however, EE3 supports use cases EE4 currently does not (recurring events being the main one) so at this time we provide support for both. We don’t have a timeline for removing EE3 completely but I can say that we will post an announcement with plenty of notice before we do.

You’re asking for plans/timelines and so the endgame for us is to eventually phase out EE3 completely and switch to EE4+. The EE4 codebase is a vast improvement over EE3, it’s much more flexible and does a lot of things in a completely different, more up-to-date way when compared with EE3.

I can tell you that all of our developer time now goes into EE4+ so if you are looking for newer features and support for newer versions of PHP you will need to switch over to EE4 moving forward. You’ll notice we provide EE3 license holders with access to EE4 and the equivalent EE4 add-ons, the reason for doing so is to allow you to test EE4 and switch over when ready to do so.
