We are having problems with EE charging customers via paypal but the IPN is not closing the sale on our end. This issue creates another major support problem for us as no email confirmation is sent to customers and prevents them from receiving any future event updates.

Hi Meg,

PayPal standard was replaced in EE with PayPal Standard a little while ago now:

However it would continue to work as is for users that already use it.

One of the main reasons for the switch was to move away from relying on IPN’s which are known for being unreliable, so I’d recommend switching over to use express, it’s exactly the same account type with PayPal but it needs different credentials and doesn’t use IPN’s.

You can find details on how to get the credentials you need here:

Well, I just checked the payment method in EE settings and it seems like we are using PayPal Express. Do you know what else can cause this problem?

Addendum: We have two payment options on checkout page and the only customers who face this issue are the ones who use Paypal. We haven’t received any complaints from customers who use Authorize.net

What can cause this is if the customer closes the browser window, loses the internet connection, or if there is any other interruption between the moment when they submit the payment at PayPal.com to the moment they return to your website, then the payment information will not update the transaction recorded in Event Espresso.

The reason you won’t get the same complaint from those that paid via Authorize.net is because they don’t leave your site, then pay, then return to your site after payment. The payment process happens on your site.

What’s the solution to this problem? Does Paypal offer checkout option without leaving the site?

They do offer a checkout option without leaving the site through Braintree. More information here:
