Hi guys, we are having a problem on one of ours website. From what I can gather, is that main EE plugin is creating a lot of transient data in wp_options. Since yesterday (let’s say 24 hours), the size of table got up to 2.2Gb after first cleaning yesterday, when it had around 5Gb. Now, it’s not the problem to purge this, but having to do it every couple of hours is a bit of nonsense, and our hosting company is breading down our neck last 2 days.

So what can we do to stop this, or at least limit it? Some of the data http://prntscr.com/hnegg4, if it helps in any way.

Thanks

Hi there,

If the transients are added at a faster rate than they can be deleted (they are temporary) then usually that’s the result of the site getting hit by bots.

You can install the Transients Manager plugin, then check the Transients logs to see the user agent of each request that’s connected to the transient record. If you see a high number of transients connected to a specific bot, you can set an .htaccess rule to block that bot.

I already did install that plugin, went through couple of pages of transients and I don’t see too much of repeating IPs or any bots under user_agent.

Could higher website traffic mean more transients stored?

For that to happen the traffic would have to outpace the rate that transients get deleted because transients are temporary data that’s stored for a short period of time then they automatically get deleted.

Traffic has not greatly increased recently. No sign of bots.

There should be at least a few bots hitting the site, each transient record is set when there’s a visit to your website.
