Uh, we, that is Tony and Lorenzo and me, finally got EE4 Events working. I entered and uploaded an event. This morning I downloaded EE 4.8.10 and, uh, everthing is gone. Even my personal information in General Settings. Do I have to reenter everything every time you update the program?

I also just noticed that all the registrants migrated from EE3 to EE4.3.2 are now gone.

What’s up with this?

Mien Gott en himmel! You’ve managed to delete all my custom questions in the registration forms! Do I have to start from scratch? If you say I do then I want a refund and I will look for another event management program that works.

No you should not need to re-enter details when updating Event Espresso, everything is stored within the database and Event Espresso does not remove anything from the database when updating.

Is the login you provided previously still active? I’d like to take a look at the system info within EE.

Yes it is active.

I may have found the problem. There is an option to migrate EE 4.3.2 settings. I just clicked on it and it is processing.

Maybe not. Migration just finished, everything is empty, and there is a list of error messages. Perhaps you should take a look.

Deactivating 4.8.10 and activating 4.3.2 doesn’t help. 4.3.2 appears to be corrupted now.

You can not switch between EE version like that, migrations update the database to the latest versions of the database, old version won’t expect the data in that format.

So you previously had 4.3.2 activated and update to 4.8.10?

When doing this you will have been prompted with a migration screen, there are two options, one to migrate the current data to the latest version, the other to delete the existing date and start over.

Did you select to migrate the data over?

I selected not to migrate the first time. The reason is that I did not see “migrate 4.3.2” all I saw was “migrate 3.0”. This was my error.

When the program was empty I then deactivated 4.8 and activated 4.3 and found it corrupted. I deactivated 4.3 and activated 4.8 and was again given the option to migrate. This time I read it carefully and saw that it would migrate 4.3. I checked this option and you see the result.

Are there really people out there using EE that want EE to strip out all of their events and registrations, and delete their database each time they upgrade to the latest version? If there aren’t then why do you offer the option? Why doesn’t the update migrate the users info by default? Isn’t it easy enough to Select All and delete if the user decides to start from scratch?

Just curious.

Yes that feature was requested.

Why doesn’t the update migrate the users info by default? Isn’t it easy enough to Select All and delete if the user decides to start from scratch?

No, for example, registrations are locked when a transaction has payments within, so if you want to remove a registration you first edit the single transaction, remove the payments, then the registration is unlocked and can be deleted.

You can not simply select all and remove all registrations.

So because that option was used the data has been removed from the database, you will need to restore a backup from before the update in which that function was used and repeat the update, this time selecting to migrate the data over.

In other words, I need to restore my previous WP backup and start over?

I assume your silence means yes. Restore and redo.

Yes, because you have deleted the data during the migration you will need to restore to a version of the database that had the data, and re-migrate.

It is not for me to tell you how to design a program. You say that some of your users requested this feature. I would say to you that any feature that can wipe out a users database and hours of work with one accidental click of a button is not a feature you should make available, no matter how many users want it.

Thank you for the feedback.

I have created a ticket to see if we can add some user proofing to that option in a future version of Event Espresso.

It occurs to me it would be rather simple. Give the user three distinct choices so they do not confuse EE3 with EE4.3 as I did]]

Migrate EE3 DB?
Migrate EE4.3 DB?
Do not migrate

The user would not have to know that the first two options are the same.

Hold on a moment, Tony. I just reinstalled my backup and reinstalled 4.8.10. After exiting the maintenence mode I see this option:

Yes. I have backed up my database, understand the risks involved, and am ready to migrate my existing EE3 (Calendar) data to EE3.0.0 (Calendar).

It says NOTHING about migrating 4.8.9 DB to 4.8.10 which is why I selected to not migrate the DB. Would you like to explain? Which option do I choose since neither applies to me?

Select Yes to migrate the data over.

Migrations do not just apply to the core plugin, but all add-ons. Your EE3 Calendar migration should have been done with the initial migration when you first installed EE4. However I know from your other posts that there was an issue with that migration so it looks like it wasn’t fully complete.

After completing this migration is your data available?

Stephen Anchell

September 23, 2015 at 11:23 am

It appears to be there, only with the data from two days ago – meaning none of the work I’ve done for two days.

Do I keep the EE3 and EE 4.3 plugins or delete them?

You will only have the data that was present in the database backup you restored to, if that’s 2 days old then its expected that none of that data would be there.

Do I keep the EE3 and EE 4.3 plugins or delete them?

Personally I would delete them.

However I keep daily backups both of the sites files and the database so I know I always have that data available, I would advise creating a full site backup and saving it before deleting them, just to be sure you have access if needed.
