Hi. I’ve read the documentation on the messaging system, but I’m still don’t understand how it works.
I need to modify the style of the header in emails to replace the gray background with something that looks a little nicer, and I need to remove the Twitter and Google Plus social links because we don’t use them.
Using the WP editor, I can go through and modify the templates for each message type (registration approved, registration cancelled, etc.); however, I’m sure there must be a simpler way and one that won’t be overwritten if we update or if we have to reinstall EE for some reason.
Can you please point me to the instructions on the correct way to do this? After searching the forums, I did find a reference to template packs and variations, but no instructions on where to find them, how to install them, or even examples of what they look like.

When you edit the message templates in the Message templates editor, they will not be overwritten on an update or reinstall of Event Espresso. This is because your template changes are stored in the database, not in the plugin’s files.

So I still do need to update each message type individually, but the work won’t be lost with an update. That’s great.

Hello,
An update to Event Espresso will not remove any customizations that you have made through the messages system.
