Duplicate, archive and Delete questions

I have way too many datetimes in one of my events. I’ve duplicated events in the past and done the whole procedure where the original ends up archived and the new duplicated, cleaned up version becomes the live event. Those times I didn’t have any new events because it was the end of the year. This time, I have at least one event that has registrations. When I duplicate, will those registrations come over to the new event and be fine, or will there be some issue because they’ve been paid for and registered on the original event, which will now be archived?

Thanks,
Fran

Hi Fran,

The duplicate event will NOT carry over any registrations, when you duplicate an event it creates a new event and re-creates the datetimes/tickets within that event to match the original. So its effectively a ‘new’ event that copy’s the other events set up.

When you say the original even is archived, what exactly are you doing with that event? Just changing the title and slug to include say the date or unpublishing the event?

Hey Tony,
I am editing the slug of original to include years archived, i.e. 2008-2020, removing the categories (so it doesn’t show up anymore), and adding **Archived** to the page title.

So what’s the best way to do this? I don’t want any more people to sign up for the March class, but I don’t want to loose the ones I have.If I do it quickly, only the March class will be affected, but if people start signing up for April and May I’m afraid it will be a mess. In that case, I’ll just leave the 3 years of expired datetimes alone and just ignore them.

Thanks,
Fran

‘Archiving’ your event in that way shouldn’t cause any problems but if you trigger emails or view invoices/templates after you’ve edited the event title (and slug) then that new title will show up on those.

Anyone using ‘old’ links for the event directly will see the ‘new’ event, but registration links (like those to pay) should continue to work, they’ll just show the title with the archived text in it.

On the ‘original’ event that you archive, set the ‘display ticket selector’ option to No to completely remove any signs of registrations happening on that event.

If it were me I’d switch ‘archive’ (the steps you’ve mentioned) the current event and duplicate it for the future events just to keep it manageable.

What part of EE will those current registrations be using?

Have they already paid? Do they all have a reg status of ‘Approved’?
