Can anyone tell me the status of when this bug will be fixed?
I found this old thread mentioning it as a known bug, but I would have thought that it would have been fixed by now.

We’d like to be able to view Draft events when logged on as admin, but not have them show up to our users in the Events widget.

Hi,
I am sorry about that, we do have a ticket in place, however it has been added to the upcoming 3.2 version as the whole events widget is being overhauled. 3.2 is now our main focus internally, as we want to get it completed, tested and released as soon as we can.
Whilst I know it is not ideal the temporary fixes outlined in the forum post you linked will resolve the issue.
