Display Multiple Categories on Calendar

Hello –

I would like to display only selected categories on the monthly calendar. I tried using more than one category identifier with the shortcode [ESPRESSO_CALENDAR event_category_id=”your_category_identifier”], but it still displays all events.

For example, I tried [ESPRESSO_CALENDAR event_category_id=”teen-events”, “adult-events”] to just display those 2 categories, but it showed all events.

Alternately, is there a shortcode to exclude a category?

Thank you very much!

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

The calendar shortcode will accept one category parameter. There is a way to work around this by assigning more than one category to an event. So in the example you posted, you could try creating a “teen-events-and-adult-events” category to display the events from both categories on the same calendar.

Thank you, Josh.

That workaround does solve the selection problem, Josh, but it seemingly creates another problem. Events that have more than one category can no longer be colour-coded in the calendar. The default category colour is used rather than the colour selected on the category page. I tried setting the “Use Colour Pickers” option to “No” on the second category (while leaving it configured on the first category), but it still reverts to default. Any idea how to work around this?

Thanks!

H.

I am also having this problem. Occasionally the event will show in the correct color, but more often than not, it shows as the default color. All of our events have at least 2 categories.

Yes, the event color problem is a real one, because events need to display the proper color assignments, for clarity.

We are experiencing this same issue as well. All of the events we are adding have multiple categories. It would be tremendously helpful if there was a sidebar widget that would allow the creation of a drop-down where there are multiple selections. As each drop-down selection is made the calendar displays events that meet the category selection criteria (where multiple categories are used for events).

Hi, Dan, et. all –

I have found the only way around this is to have your categories in hierarchical order. For example, I may have an event that I want to label as ‘Kids’ and ‘Storytimes,’ with the Storytimes color showing. If I have ‘Kids’ in the category listing before ‘Storytimes’, the color for ‘Kids’ will dominate. This is a real problem when you add a new category that you want to be higher in the hierarchy. I just opened a ticket this morning to ask if there’s a way to rearrange categories.

Not sure if this helps, but I wanted to share what has worked for me, because this is a frustrating problem. I hope for easier work arounds.

I just wanted to follow up to find out whether there was any plan or any known way to create a drop-down in a sidebar widget to allow for selecting multiple categories and the calendar then displaying event(s) that met those selection criteria. I am not sure if the calendar is capable of displaying more than one category at this time.
