Dilemma upgrading to EE4

After installing and activating the EE4 (version 4.7.1.p) plugin, I received the maintenance message that I needed to migrate my database from EE 4.2.7.p to 4.7.1.p. I was confused by this message since I had been using 3.1.37.4.P. However, I soon remembered that I initially installed EE 4.2.7.p when I first purchased EE, but after testing it out I realized that EE3 was more appropriate to use. I then decided to “downgrade” to EE3 and installed/activated 3.1.36.5.P. Well, that was a year ago and now have about a dozen events added. I believe that what is happening is that when I install 4.7.1.p only the data from 4.2.7.p is being migrated, which is one test event that I created. Is there any way that I can remove the 4.2.7.p data and then migrate the EE3 data? I have backups of all the data.

Your assessment of the situation is correct: when you installed EE 4.7.1.p it’s only migrating your EE 4.2.7.p data, NOT your EE 3.1.36.P data.

So you want to (1) remove all the EE4 data BUT leave all the EE3 data in place, and then (2) RE-migrate your data from EE3. Right?

To do (1), just go to EE4’s maintenance page, click the “Reset/Delete Data” tab (which is accessible while the EE is in maintenance mode too), and then click “Permanently Delete All Event Espresso Data”. See this screenshot. The button should REALLY be labelled “Permanently Delete All Event Espresso 4 Data” (there isn’t yet an option to delete EE3 tables). This will delete all your EE4 tables, data and wp options BUT leave your EE3 tables, data and options in-place, AND it will deactivate EE4 for you.

To do (2), just re-activate EE 4.7.1.p and run the migrations.

Hi Eric,

Just a polite reminder to create a database backup before performing the above steps.

The feature mentioned is considered stable and we have had no reports of issues when using it, however it is always best to make a database backup before making changes to the database, just to be safe.

There are multiple plugins available to do this, here is one I use as an example:
