1. we need the user to be able to sign up for multiple events at the same time.
2. We need to be able to use it to pay for books, hoping we can make this work (may have to make and “event” look like a book)
3. people need to be able to register for an event WITHOUT paying. This needs to be an option even if the event costs money. Many people want to send in a check, so then we will go in and mark them as paid.

How are you today?
With the Multiple Event Registration addon (https://eventespresso.com/product/espresso-multiple/) people can register for multiple events and purchase multiple tickets at once. It might be best to just setup the book as a separate ticket.
If you use the Invoice gateway, people print off a PDF and mail their check.
Does that help? It should get you close to what you need.
