Default Registration Status Not Working, Payments Not Going Through

My client is selling event tickets now, and the registrations are not working as expected. They want all registrations (paid, payment pending, etc.) to count toward the total tickets sold, and for the event to be Sold Out when the max number of tickets (registrations) is reached.

We set the Default Registration Status for the event to Approved, but only paid-for tickets are being counted toward the limit, and the event was quickly oversold. The admin had to change the ticket sale date to stop further registrations.

I registered for the event and successfully paid through PayPal, but Event Espresso says I have not paid. Only a handful of the payments seem to have actually gone through to the plugin, which exacerbates the problem of the Default Registration Status not working.

We’re running the latest version of Event Espresso, and the Default Registration Status was working as intended for our last event in August 2014 (though I think there were some PayPal issues back then too).

Any help would be much appreciated! Let me know if I can provide further info.

Quick update: The PayPal payments are going through to EE, but they’re marked as Failed. I think the payment problem might be due to PayPal IPN not being enabled. I’m trying to help my client set it up, but PayPal’s new website isn’t playing nicely.

Hi Natalie, here are the steps to get to the IPN settings for PayPal with the new PayPal account design.

1) Login to PayPal.com

2) Click on the person icon in the top right corner:

3) Then click on Profile and Settings:

4) Along the left menu, you’ll see a link for My Selling Tools. Click on that.

5) Then look for Instant Payment Notifications under the Getting paid and managing risk area and then click on the Update link:

You can use your site URL for the URL that is requested. Event Espresso sends the correct URL with each payment request.

Be sure the IPN is turned on and then save changes.

Hi Lorenzo,
Thanks for the information. I can only find these settings if I upgrade my PayPal account to a Business account. Does this mean a Business account is required even to use the PayPal Standard payment method?

Hi, you are correct. You’ll need a business account or a premier account.
