Critical Error due to Event Espresso Plug in?

I have a message from WordPress that Event Espresso is causing a critical error on my website? Can you help me solve this issue? Please see below: Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Event Espresso.

First, visit your website and check for any visible issues. Next, visit the page where the error was caught and check for any visible issues.

Please contact your host for assistance with investigating this issue further.

Hi there,

Where do you see that error message on the site?

Do you get an email showing any additional error messages?

If not, check your hosts control panel to view errors on the server, we need to know the ‘real’ error being thrown and not the ‘pretty’ version (the one shown to visitors) to investigate this.

I saw that there was an update that just posted, and I tried to update to the latest version of Event Espresso. It then sent me a message saying: “Update failed: Could not copy file”

I was able to access WordPress in “Recovery Mode” because otherwise I can’t get into WordPress. Please assist as soon as possible. Thank you. – Cara

I didn’t get any additional error messages. Where is the host’s control panel?

I went on WordPress in “recovery mode” again which is the only way that I can access WordPress, and I was surprised to not see Event Espresso as a plugin. Then I saw this message:

The plugin event-espresso-core-reg/espresso.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist.

Please help.

Yeah, sounds like the update has failed.

Can I take a look at the site?

Note to fix this I will likely need both WP-Admin credentials and also FTP credentials which you can send using this form:

I filled in the form as you requested and I sent an email reply. Please let me know what happens.

I need to be able to access files on the server and can’t do that directly through WordPress so need FTP credentials.

Do you have FTP credentials?

Or, do you have access to a control panel through your host? (I assume GoDaddy?)
I can walk you through how to create an FTP account from there.

I have GoDaddy, and please let me know how to create an FTP account here. Thank you.

When you log into your GoDaddy account, do you see ‘Web Hosting’ with a list of domains on your account?

Then next to those a ‘Manage’ button?

Like the images shown here:

https://uk.godaddy.com/help/add-ftp-users-to-my-linux-hosting-account-16044

If so, follow the steps on that article and create an FTP account (don’t forget to set the directory to just /)

Then resend the credentials using the form I sent over earlier.

Hi there,

Which email did you send the details to? I don’t see any emails.

The email used to send notifications of forum posts is a no-reply address so we don’t get those, that’s one of the reasons we advise to use the form above to send credentials.

Hi there,

There’s something more going on here, I can’t reinstall the plugin through your WP Admin dashboard, the upload fails server side.

Are you sure your hosting package still has space available? (It usually shows you the space used/available on your control panel)

HI there, I spoke to GoDaddy. They said that I have more than enough space available, and they tried downloading a file successfully. There is also no malware on the website. I hope that this helps!

Did they download a file from the website itself? If so that doesn’t really help or test the issue.

The WordPress plugin updater could not create a directory for Event Espresso, nor could it move the downloaded file from the temp location so there is an issue on the server here.

I’ve manually uploaded Event Espresso back onto your site and as you had an issue with the latest update I used 4.10.13.p

We’ve had a couple of reports of users having issues with the latest version which we are currently investigating so I recommend holding off on updating Event Espresso for just a little.

We’ll likely be releasing another update soon with some additional fixes soon, however, note that if the issue is on the server itself you may end up with the same error you did previously. It’s a simple enough fix in that Event Espresso needs to be manually uploaded but it’s not something you should normally need to do.

Hi there,

We have just pushed the update live, version 4.10.17.p should now be available to download.

If you don’t see the update available in Dashboard -> Plugins for Event Espresso then go to:

Event Espresso -> General Settings.

Don’t make any changes and just hit save to force a version check.

It should then show the update available.

If up update Event Espresso using the link, does it now work?
