I want to create additional templates so that specific pages can have different widgets. I have made variations on “template-twocolumns-right.php” but from this point, I am stuck. What is the process to add templates and should I do this in a child theme?

Hi Bob,
This can get really tricky and messy if you go beyond a few page templates. Which, by the way, this isn’t something support or recommend.
Instead of managing widgets via different page templates, you can use a plugin like widget logic. Widget Logic lets you control on which pages widgets appear using WordPress’s conditional tags. Another similar plugin is Widget Context.
