I deleted everything up to Jan 2016. All pics and events. When I tried upgrading to EE4, it says there are 170,000 records to update. There are only 582 Inactive/Active events and 2938 total attendees.
First to answer your questions about where the records come from: Each event can have many records. These include dates, times, prices, venue information, registration form questions. Along with that, each attendee can have many records. These include ticket the option they selected, whether they paid or not, and answers to registration form questions.
One suggestion that you may want to consider is clone the site that has EE3 onto a staging and use for archival purposes. This way the data can still be accessed on that site, then you can install EE4 on the live site.
But how will I install EE4 without it trying to update all the info? Are you saying to delete all data for EE3 and install 4? The problem is that they have current registrations for future events over the next couple months. How will I get that data for upcoming events?
You’ll need to migrate the data from EE3 to EE4 then.
