Hi there,
I have two questions about charging sales tax through the “surcharge” function:
In order to add sales tax to my events (13% HST in Ontario), I have been adding a “13% surcharge” to individual events. However, I would prefer the tax to be applied automatically and display as “HST”. I’ve tried adding a “default surcharge” in the “General Settings” panel, with the display text “HST”, but that didn’t seem to work (ie. it didn’t get applied to my current event listings).
If I am using the groupon add-on to accept groupon codes for my events, I still need to charge tax to my customers. However, when a groupon code is used, the discount is applied to both the event amount, and the surcharge – eg. for the event that I tested, the event is $160 + 13% surcharge, which comes to $180.80 (discount of $180.80 applied). Any suggestions on how to charge tax while using groupon?
PS – I am currently using an outdated version of EE, and am waiting to get some help in updating my server capacity before I can update to the latest version. Apologies if I can resolve these issues by updating to the latest version, but it would be helpful to know nonetheless! Thanks!
For the first question, you’ll need to individually update the surcharge amount for the events that were created before the change was made in the General Settings. This setting change will only affect newly created events. The text should automatically apply though, but you can try updating these events to see if that makes a difference.
The current version of the Groupon add-on does not have the capability add a surcharge. There is a developer on the team who has been assigned to refactor the Groupon add-on, and this item is on the list of improvements that need to be made.
