I have created a question, type is text, character limit is 1. Added question to question group. But it is giving a whole row to enter the text rather than one character. morrisplainsboro.org/register password is garagesale (this is for the garage sale event)

Hi there,
Event Espresso does not limit the size of the form fields based on the max number of characters you can input.
May I ask why you are using a text box question for this?
Wouldn’t a checkbox question type suit better for this type of question, it’s either checked or not for those questions?

The reason is that the CSV download I want to have the name of the item as a heading, so that each column can have an X as it applies. I guess I will try a dropdown for blank or X – it is confusing because right under the text option it asks for max # characters.

You can do that with checkboxes if you create each option as a question, like so:

Set them into a Question Group:

Ask that group on the event, all similar to what you have above just with the checkbox questions separated.
Then in the CSV you’ll get something like this:

Sure, EE will process the question based on the max number you set but it will not change the size the input field is displayed at based on the value set there.
