I have tried to change the function of the child theme but the receipt html with the PDF download link, still shows the ugly address layout.

Hi there,
The function to format the addresses is not used on the messages system but you can set your own format for the address used there.
Go to: Event Espresso -> Payment Methods -> Invoice (If its not active, temporarily activate it)
There you’ll find the ‘Payee Address’ field.
Add your address to that location, in the format you prefer, and that will be used where the [INVOICE_PAYEE_ADDRESS] shortcode is used.
