My client would like to have the number of places available for each event so that Internet users know whether to book urgently or not !

May I ask where you are looking to include that information?
Can you add a screenshot?
It might be possible but depending on where you want to include that info you could be increasing the number of queries on the page a fair amount.

You can add that to a custom functions plugin on your site, we have some documentation on creating one here:
