The event has a trade show component and classes that attendees can take, depending on their registration level purchase. Some classes are an hour, some half day, some full day. Upon registration, they select the classes they wish to attend. The website will track class attendance so any class is not overbooked. The system must also print out their badges with the registered classes, rooms and times on them. Can EE do all of this either out of the box or with add-ons? Or would that be customization and if so, does this sound like a major revamp or just tweaking the system some? I’ve got no problem paying for the functionality required so not looking for a free plugin but also not looking for a multi-thousand dollar redevelopment project. The site currently does all of the above but the underlying CMS and custom database is getting long in the tooth and thinking about replacing it, either this year or next, depending on cost and implementation complexity.

Hi Dave,

Event Espresso can handle your event registration however currently we have 2 versions of Event Espresso, EE3 and EE4.

EE3 can handle almost all of your current requirements using the Multi Event Registration Add-on (MER) and Ticketing Add-on in which you could create separate events to represent each of your classes and use MER to allow the users to add a selection of those events to a cart and register onto all at once. Then using the ticketing add-on you can provide badges they can print with the information requested.

Using EE3 in this manor means your events are actually separate events the user must register onto (they can be grouped), you have control of the attendee limits for each event/session but this becomes a little more difficult to manage.

EE4 is our latest version (currently in Beta) which has been a complete re-write of Event Espresso. This version allows you to create multiple tickets you can select within a single event, so one Trade show event could have multiple tickets used as classes available to purchase. Each of those tickets can have individual qty limits and the datetime for the event can have an overall limit. This version would suit your event type better, however due to the fact that EE3 and EE4 are so vastly different, non of the current add-ons work with EE4 (although some are not needed as they will be a part of core) and currently does not have a ticketing type add-on which would be needed your badges, although it would be possible to create badges using the messages system, this would not be a part of core currently.

So to summarise EE3 can handle the registrations currently with a couple of limitations/quirks. EE4 will eventually suit your needs better but will currently work for most of your requirements and require some custom work for others.

Or would that be customization and if so, does this sound like a major revamp or just tweaking the system some?

It really depends on how you would like to information displayed, you may find the current implementation suitable with only minor tweaks. I would recommend signing up to Test Drive Event Espresso 4 and also EE3 Test Drive so you can create events within each version and see for yourself how Event Espresso works.

If you have any other question please just let me know.
