When viewing calendar on my phone I can only see the events if I turn my phone to landscape mode. In portrait mode the calendar looks empty.

Hi,
The calendar view on a small screen like a phone works best if each event has a featured image set.
If you prefer to not use featured images for events, another approach you could take would be to serve a list events to small screens only. We have a guide that shows how to set up your calendar page to serve a list of events to small screens:

Hi again,
I see there’s a support token redeemed for this.
One other option that we could do that doesn’t involve uploading featured images or installing any plugins is we could add some CSS to display a icon of your choice for each event when it’s a small screen.
As an example, I’ve added some CSS to your site that displays a pin for each event when it’s a small screen. Can you check the event calendar page on your phone and let me know if that will work for you?

It’s possible to use other icons available from WordPress core if any of those will do.
