Calendar not showing again, without any errors

I created a thread on your website earlier about the calendar not showing up. When you replied with a solution the calendar worked fine, untill a few days ago.

The page where you can see the calendar not showing is located here: http://www.licenselogic.com/?page_id=27

We checked up with our hosting provider to see if our recourses were running low, like you suggested. They told us everything was fine so its not on our end.

I could provide you FTP access to the website if needed to resolve the issue.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing the issue is we’re still running WP 3.4.x instead of 3.5.

Keep me posted please.

Hi Thomas,

What is the shortcode being used on the calendar page?

Can you try changing it to [ESPRESSO_CALENDAR show_expired=”false”]

Below is the short code cut and pasted from our site:

[ESPRESSO_CALENDAR show_expired=”false”]

any other solutions?

Hi Thomas,

I’d try setting the wp-debug setting to true in wp-config.php. You may get an error message that will point to the cause.

If you don’t get any error messages, it may be a case where the there’s a query limit set and it’s maxed out. How many events are in the system?

Josh,

We do have 61 events in the system. I actived the WP-debug mode, we do get some notices but not any from Event Espresso plugin. I deactivated one of the plugins that caused a notice, it still doesn’t show up.
Where could I find the query limit?

I’m experiencing the same issue, as of last Friday. Nothing has changed in our theme or in the plugin setup, and I’m not seeing any JS console errors or any errors in our Apache logs.

Hi Thomas,

You can check with the host for the query limit. You might try temporarily switching to the default WordPress theme to see if that helps. I checked the source of the page that lists out the events, and it’s says:

The calendar will usually do more queries than the event list, so if the limit is 500, it might be going over.

@kimberly Clark, the calendar appears to be displaying fine when I view it on the site that’s linked to your support license. Can you please post a new topic thread so we can help you there? This helps keep the support forums organized. Thanks.

Josh,

My host is HostGator and they are excellent in terms of support. I have a shared server and this issue of the Calendar disappearing happened once before and the resolution was [ESPRESSO_CALENDAR show_expired=”false”], but this time the queries issue looks to be the case. However, how many events do I have to delete? I now have 50 events and from talking to HostGator they mentioned why the calendar needed to do so many queries. The calendar worked before when I had roughly the same #. If I have to move to a new server just to support the calendar that will cause a lot of headache. Can you do more on your end in terms of a query fix or come up with another solution?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Thomas,

I’m not sure whether this is even an issue related to a query limit. 50 events is a relatively small number of events, it would take a lot more than 50 events in the system to break the calendar.

Have you tried temporarily switching to another theme?

Josh,

I have not tested it with a different theme and it has worked fine for periods I time with current theme. I worked really hard with my current theme and am concerned that if I go to another theme things will get screwed up. Have you had a deep dive into this issue?

Josh,

I spoke with my Tech staff and we already tried a different theme and it did not work.

This is critical to my business. I need an event management that works this week. Will you be able to figure out this issue?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

I’ve been running all kinds of tests on my test calendar, so I have been trying to figure out why this isn’t working for you.

Can you go into the calendar settings and try turning off as many options as possible to see if it makes a difference? I’d recommend setting these to No:

  1. Show Event Time in Calendar
  2. Use Color Pickers
  3. Show Tooltips
  4. Enable CSS for Categories

Another thing that you can try is the older version of the calendar (1.11) which can be downloaded here:

Josh,

I set all the settings to NO below:

1.Show Event Time in Calendar
2.Use Color Pickers
3.Show Tooltips
4.Enable CSS for Categories
(#4 was already @ NO)

will downloading the older version mean that I will have to reupload all my events? What is the process to trying the older version without taking away any current events if possible. It was a lot of work to upload all of those events.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

You can deactivate the current version of the calendar and install the older version of the calendar without re-entering the events. The calendar add-ons display the events that were entered into the system via the core Event Espresso plugin.

Josh,

I uploaded version 1.1, and deactivated the new version. Still nothing. This is quite frustrating because I see that Event Espresso has a lot of good functionality, however, if I cannot display my events properly Event Espresso has really no use. Any other suggestions?

FYI with the version 1.1 I tried both shortcodes on my Calendar page:

[ESPRESSO_CALENDAR show_expired=”false”]
and
[ESPRESSO_CALENDAR]

neither worked.

Frustrated beyond belief,
Adam

Hi Adam,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems with getting the calendar to display. Can you try deactivating all other plugins (besides the Event Espresso and Calendar add-on) to see if that makes a difference?

Thomas Ayer

Do you have any other solutions besides plugins that are not yours? It seems that sense this is not the first time that this has happened to my website – see previous tech support items – I feel that EE is missing something. I don’t want to deactivate other plugins as some are crucial to my website.

Hi Thomas,

I don’t have any other ideas at this point. Temporarily deactivating all other plugins is a common troubleshooting step that will help rule out the cause of the issue that you are having. If you find that when you temporarily deactivate the calendar suddenly appears, you can start reactivating them one by one until it disappears again, then we can go from there to find a solution.

If you deactivate all non-EE plugins, and the calendar doesn’t appear, then we have ruled out any plugin conflicts, and then we can go from there to find a solution.

OK Josh the calendar is showing up after I deactivated everything. However, I am not a techie and my tech staff person is out. So what is the process for me to figure out which other plugin is the problem? I need some to be activated moving forward. In addition, I do have the earlier version running (1.1 I believe) and the widget of the small calendar on my home page is gone. What should I do next?

Thanks,
Adam

You can deactivate the old calendar (version 1.1) and reactivate the new version of the calendar to get the small calendar widget back.

Then, in order to find the plugin that was contributing to the calendar disappearing, you can start activating the deactivated plugins one by one. What that means is, reactivate a plugin, then refresh the calendar page. If the calendar still displays, you can move on to the next plugin in the list and re-active it. You’ll eventually activate one and the calendar will disappear. Then you’ll know which plugin it was.

Drumroll please… well Josh I will say that if you were not so timely I was probably going to move to entirely new platform. But you kept responding to me with support. OK again drumroll please…

FYI the plugin that cause the calendar to go away…

Google Analytics for WordPRess
Version 4.2.8
By Joost de Valk

we figured out the plugin that was causing the issue.

Can you see if there is a way to make this plugin or a similar plugin work with EE?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

I’m running Google Analytics for WordPress (4.2.8) on my test install with no calendar issues. Can you check the settings? There may be an issue with one of the settings. One setting that has caused problems in the past is the outbound click tracking, but it didn’t seem to affect the calendar at the time.

One alternative that I’ve had success using outbound click tracking with Event Espresso installed is the Google analyticator plugin.

Thomas Ayer

January 15, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Josh,

That was it. I unchecked the setting for tracking outbound clicks and the calendar appears. Any chance you can get the two to be happy? Or should I go get the Google Analyticator plugin?

Thanks!

Adam
