When I hover over an event and then click “register now” the calendar just reloads instead of taking me to the specific event.

Hi David,
Can you share the URL with us so we can take a look? There may be a plugin or theme conflict.
Try to rule out any plugin conflicts. Deactivate all non Event Espresso plugins and test to see if the issue is still occurring. If it is not, then we know it is a problem with another plugin. You can then find out which plugin it is by reactivating each plugin individually and testing to see if the problem starts happening after the activation. When it occurs after activating a plugin, then we know this is the culprit.
You can check for a theme conflict by first switching to the TwentyTwelve theme (or any other theme from the wordpress.org theme repository, all of these themes pass a thorough code quality review before inclusion.)

There are no other plugins on the site and I tired it while the theme was set to TwentyTwelve. Its still not working.

Hi David,
It looks like the [ESPRESSO_EVENTS] shortcode was replaced with another shortcode. What you’ll need to do is create a separate page for the calendar and put [ESPRESSO_CALENDAR] on it, and change the shortcode on the event-registration page to [ESPRESSO_EVENTS]
