Buying an annual membership – how to do?

We are a nonprofit organization and use EE to sell tickets to our clinics and register for other events. We also have an annual membership fee that we used to handle outside of EE, but this year we rolled that into EE by making it as an event on Dec 31st and allowing ticket sales for the “event” all year long. This seems a bit of a kludge. Is there a better way of doing this?

Hi Tom,

Do your memberships provide a login for the site?

Event Espresso is not designed to be used for memberships, its possible using an event like you have however you will likely find it much better to use a membership plugin such as Ultimate Member or S2Member.

The membership plugin then handles the annual membership and EE handles your events, however to work that way you need to provide your members with an account on the site (so they can manage the membership through that).

Tony-

I have the plugin Paid Memberships Pro, but don’t use it to accept payment for memberships as it requires the purchase of an additional payment Gateway and it was moderately difficult to get our club’s commercial account set up to work with Event Espresso as it was.

Has EE considered adding a “membership” event type? It seems like it would be easy to implement and for nonprofit clubs it would obviate the need for a separate membership plugin.

We have discussed similar options previously an found a membership plugin is best suited to provide memberships.

Event Espresso is an event management plugin with some very limited user registration options, the EE4 User Integration add-on will automatically generate a user account based on the information provided during registration but we do not ‘manage’ users. One of the reasons we do this is to provide users with the most flexibility to chose how they manage the users on their site, you are free to chose any membership plugin to provide memberships and EE can work with those membership plugins (as long as they assign a capability to the user EE can check for, almost all do).

Creating a users membership account is relatively simple, managing that account is not. A system would need to be built to create and remove the ‘membership’ from the user account which would also require further options to specify the type of membership, how long it remains on the user account, billing for the membership and so on. Membership plugins are designed to handle this, EE is not.

It would be possible integrate better with a specific membership plugin (although we don’t have plans to do so currently) which could allow for a registration to create a membership through a membership plugin during the registration however again that’s not Event Espresso handling memberships, its just using the power of a membership plugin during a registration. The membership plugin itself would handle the rest.
