Hello there,

We’ve recently tried out the Event Espresso platform for our client (for their clients…). Unfortunately, they seem to have a problem registering on the system as the website is being blocked by their server.

While they can also make an exception on THEIR system for the site, their worry is that the platform will also be blocked on other major corporate servers (their clients).

We tested the leniency of their server by creating dummy tests on two well-known event management platforms (ConstantContact and Eventbrite), which seemed to pass the test.

Would you have any suggestions for ensuring the system passes major corporate servers? Has anyone using EventEspresso had this problem before?

Kind regards,

Katie

Hi Kathleen,

What is the setup being run here? For example is this a multisite situation or a single install?

In what way is the website being blocked?

Eventbrite and Constantcontact are hosted options, rather than separate site for events, is that what you/your clients are trying to achieve?

Hi Dean,

This is a single install. Our client is trying to create a separate site for their events platform, for which they invite their (corporate) clients to register.

While this is all fine at our end, we are finding out that corporates are particularly having trouble accessing the site and registering.

A test eNewsletter sent to our client asking them to register to the site takes them to the specific event page. Initially (though not always), this is being blocked by corporate servers (generic corporate server error message). If they bypass that, they can try to register.

Once they click the ‘Register’ button, the next process is also being blocked due by corporate servers. If you bypass this, the event registration still does not go through once you fill in your details and click ‘Confirm’, the same problem cropping up (and the auto-confirmation page therefore does not appear).

Would adding a SSL certificate to the website make any difference at all? Would you have other suggestions?

Kind regards,

Katie

Hi Katie,

The hardest to implement (as I assume the clientelle changes) yet most effective way of resolving this would be to ask the corporate clients to whitelist your clients site.

Corporate networks will all run on different criteria set by their IT departments, and in my own experience I know that the censorship is often heavy handed and yet ineffective, often letting dubious sites pass as many times as they block them as well as blocking innocent sites such as your clients.

My guess is that most of them will be seeing the scripts running and blocking those, or looking at the url structure, thinking its dodgy and blocking it that way, though I am no network engineer.

If you have contact with any of the corporate clients, it may well be worth asking their IT sections on what basis are they blocking the site.

Whilst an SSL may help, it’s no guarantee, but you could test it with a free SSL certificate.
