Barcode scanner plugin – can't scan barcode

Hi,

I’m using core 4.8.25.p with barcode scanner 1.0.6.p.

I’m running OSX and the scanner is KB Wedge (B542828)

I’m unable to scan the barcodes on the tickets EE provides. I can scan other barcodes ok, only the EE barcodes will not scan.

I realise there’s a bunch of barcode standards. Do you have a suggestion for a hand scanner that will work with OSX and also a scanner that will work with Windows?

Or is there a filter in the plugin to select which standard of barcode should be used?

Hi Richard,

Unfortunately I can’t find any details on that scanner, is that the correct model number?

Pretty much any scanner should work, it just depends on which standard your scanner supports and if the barcode type that EE is using (code93 by default) is supported (and enabled) on your scanner. Some scanners support X amount of code types, but then come with only 1 or 2 enabled.

Before recommending purchasing a new scanner, there is a parameter you can pass to the barcode shortcode to set the barcode type generated.

Go to Event Espresso -> Messages -> Ticket, click the ‘Registrant’ link – http://take.ms/bN2tb (In this case the ‘Edit’ link also goes to the same place as there is only a single context)

There you will find the template used to generate the ticket, look for the barcode shortcode, it will be something like:

[BARCODE_* w=1 h=70 fsize=18 bgcolor=#ffffff color=#000000 output_type=bmp]

You can set the barcode type to generate using the ‘type’ attribute:

[BARCODE_* w=1 h=70 fsize=18 bgcolor=#ffffff color=#000000 output_type=bmp type=code39]

EE currently supports 4 code types:

code39
code93
code128
datamatrix

You’ll find a details on these within the Help section within that page (Top right, Help -> Message Shortcodes, look for the [BARCODE_*] section)

Try different code types (you can add multiple instances of the shortcode each with a different type to test) and see if your scanner picks them up.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for such a thorough and helpful answer. I reckon it’s the scanner that’s the problem. It may also be a US vs the rest of the World standards issue. I figure a QR scanner is probably the best bet as I’ll be able to skip all that malarkey.

In any case, great support, great answer!

You’re most welcome.

It may also be a US vs the rest of the World standards issue.

Its possible, although most store products use EAN or UPC so it could be your scanner only supports those barcode types.

Take a look at my reply within your other thread here:

https://eventespresso.com/topic/mobile-app-ee4-compatable-version/#post-183718

The apps there support both 1D (the barcodes mentioned here) and 2D shortcodes (QRCodes) if your looking to do some testing.
