If the calendar has suddenly vanished from your website, or there’s an unexpected “First Name required” error displaying on the registration form, or your homepage slider or menu is broken after updating to WordPress 4.5, have no fear! We are here to help.

The first thing to do is make sure you’ve updated your plugins and theme to the latest versions. After you make the updates, you will then need to clear your browser’s cache before you test to make sure the changes take affect.

Still broken? Here’s some information about why there’s potential breakage after the update to WordPress 4.5:

WordPress 4.5 includes the latest version of jQuery 1.12. Older versions of the jQuery library, which were bundled with older versions of WordPress, allowed incorrect syntax to actually work. This happy accident was fixed in jQuery 1.12. This is the typical error in the Javascript console:

Error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: [href=#]

If you’ve updated to the latest version of your theme and plugins and still see the above issues, the way forward is try temporarily deactivating all of the other plugins that may include JavaScript on the front end of the website. If the issue persists, then it’s likely a script from the WordPress theme that needs fixing. It’s usually a one-line fix. You can contact the theme author to report the error and request the fix. If you need help with identifying the source of the error, please start a new support thread and please be sure to include the name of the WordPress theme and a link to your website.

Some of the more popular themes and plugins that were affected by the update to the newer version of the jQuery library, that may have recent updates available are:

  • Divi
  • Avada
  • HeadSpace2
  • Beaver Builder plugin
  • Visual Composer plugin
  • Many other themes from ThemeForest
