I was wondering if there is a way for someone to purchase a number of different types of tickets when they select the ‘add more attendees’ option for instance a child and an adult ticket?

Hello,
Currently the best way to do this would be with the Multiple Event Registration add on.
Create the event with the multiple ticket prices as per normal, and when the user Adds to Cart, they can select the number of each ticket they want.

Is that the add to cart button on the main event list?

It is when the Multi Event Registration add-on is installed and activated. You can actually place add-to-cart buttons on your registration pages as well. Please see this guide for more info:
