After I upgraded to Version 4.10.4.p, everyone who had ever registered on our site before received an email that they had registered, back into registrations from 2017, even. Why is that?
That could happen if both of the followind conditions are met: The Messages Activity log still has those messages stored and the wp-cron tasks that handle triggering the sending of emails had been deleted/removed. In other words there were emails that were generated, but not logged as sent. So when you activated a new version it would restore the wp-cron tasks, then the Messages system goes through and processes emails that were flagged as not sent.
What you can do to avoid this is go to Event Espresso > Messages > Settings and set the option to clean up old messages after 3 months or so. That will tell Event Espresso to automatically delete messages that are older than 3 months.
Then, before updating the plugin next time, check for failed messages in Event Espresso > Messages. If you see failed messages there and you do not want those sent, you can delete those before updating the plugin.
@John, thanks. That makes sense. I just wish I would have know that before as now lots of people are contacting us wondering why they received an email that is up to 3 years old!
