How can I add an opt in to email button that is pre-selected, so they have to unselect to opt-out (without adding the Mailchimp plugin)?

Yes, you can do that by creating additional question for registration and insert checkbox.

but, what are you going to use, if you will not use mailchimp plugin?

thanks

If you’re not going to let MailChimp manage your double opt-in settings, then I would:
– create a opt-in dropdown question
– set the default or first answer to Yes
– give an option for no but it has to be manually selected

Does that help?

I added a question with a checkbox but I don’t see any way to have it pre-selected (or defaulted), regardless if it’s one question or two.

We will manually add them to our email list. I need to read more about the mailchimp plugin. It sounded unnecessarily complicated.

The MailChimp add-on allows you to select a list that the user is automatically subscribed to when they register.

So you install it, set your API key and then select the Mailchimp List (Audience) and Groups (if any) they apply to within the event.

May I ask how that is unnecessarily complicated? I can open a discussion within the team to discuss this further if you can add more details.

I did mention needing to review it again because I just did a quick review. The complication is on the user side with the double opt-in process and maybe “unnecessarily” was more extreme than it needed to be. It’s still a possibility that we would add it but I have to present it to my team. It would be simpler if it was an opt in / out right on the form without a secondary email, which is what I want to create, although it’s more work on our end because we have to manually add the emails to our mail list.

The integration with MailChimp is intended to do that redundant work for you. It’ll manage opting people in, follow your double opt-in rules (or not), and let people manage their subscription to your list.

I installed the Mailchimp add-on but it’s not accepting the API I generated through Mailchimp. It says it’s an invalid API key. There was an existing API on Mailchimp that I don’t have the full number for, could be that be the issue?

Hmm, no, it should work.

MailChimp recently made changes to their API and some accounts may have changed over.

Try using THIS version of the addon.
