Hi Joel,

Event Espresso builds out the email content then passes that over to a WP core function called wp_mail() which is where all of your sites email will generally be processed, it basically does some additional checks on the content and sets up the email ready to send over to your server, your server does whatever it is set up to do to send the email.

The ‘Check Email’ plugin sends a plain text email through wp_mail() to confirm if WP can send emails, as they don’t appear to be sending, that’s what needs fixing as if WP can’t send emails, neither can Event Espresso. (If there’s a problem with EE emails after fixing that we can investigate that further).

You host would usually run a mail server that can use with your site, you would need to contact them to find out why that’s not working right now. Hoever, we find most web host mail servers to be unreliable (there are some that work fine, but often people run into problems with them) so usually recommend using a transactional email service and have some listed here:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/postmark-app-mandrill-transactional-email-handling-services/

The plugins used for those services hook into WP mail and tell it to send the email through their servers, rather than your own.
