Child Themes Now Available for Event Espresso 4

Ever find yourself wishing that WordPress themes would look better, out of the box, with Event Espresso 4? Well, I have some good news! We now have a small selection of child themes available for Event Espresso 4.

We have been using a selection of about 20, optimized WordPress child themes on our hosted platform, Event Smart, for the past two years. I’ve always thought it would be a great idea to release these themes to Event Espresso users, so I’ve started a new, bare-bones, little theme shop called, Espresso Themes, where I am hosting a limited selection of WordPress child themes, specially brewed, just for Event Espresso 4.

Child Themes Optimized for Event Espresso 4

Many WordPress themes tend to display the published date on each post, which usually conflicts with the event dates, which is confusing to your customers.

The following screenshot is an example of the default Baskerville WordPress theme. If you look at the post meta section at the bottom, you can see the author information, then on the right side, the post date and post category.

Default WordPress Post Output - Baskerville Theme

Default WordPress Post Output – Baskerville Theme

However, if you are running Event Espresso, the event date that shows on the single event page, or the event list doesn’t correspond to the post date. In the example below, the post date that shows in the post meta output of the theme, which is confusing to event goers that are trying to learn about the event.

On Event Smart, we have engineered around twenty child themes to show the event dates, instead of the post dates in those places.

In the example below, the post date section has been removed on the single event post.

Optimized WordPress Event Output - Baskerville Child Theme

Optimized WordPress Event Output – Baskerville Child Theme

As you can see, the child themes have been optimized for Event Espresso 4 to display event dates and times, instead of post dates, which are common in many default WordPress themes. In this case, I removed the meta box entirely, as I thought it made the event page cleaner and focused on purchasing tickets.

Four child themes launched in October

In October, I started the website and made four new child themes available. Now, I have plans to launch around 20 more in the coming weeks, in between other tasks. The primary functions to launch a new child theme are relatively tedious but straightforward.

What about support and one-click updates?

Support and one-click updates for the child themes are primarily handled via Github and a private theme update service, called Kernl.

What about premium themes?

I’ve decided to create a section dedicated to premium themes that work well with Event Espresso. From there you will find a selection of third-party event themes and standard themes that work well with Event Espresso.

Why create a new theme shop?

One reason is that we don’t have a system to deploy automated theme updates as we do for the plugin. Instead of adding themes for sale on our Event Espresso website and tying up valuable resources on that site. I created a very simple (bare-bones), standalone theme shop to promote the child themes and provide one-click theme updates. Since these are free child themes, I decided to set up a simple shopping cart system, using Easy Digital Downloads, which only took a matter of minutes to set up. I wrote about the process, on my blog, entitled: Bare-bones Guide to Launching a WordPress Theme Shop from Scratch

Comments, feedback, questions?

I hope you find this information useful and are inspired to develop child themes for Event Espresso. If you do, I hope that you find these child themes to be an excellent starting point and a useful guide in your endeavors.

I love hearing your ideas and thoughts regarding our services, so please feel free to send us an email or submit your own child theme to our directory.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments below.

How Event Espresso Helped Easily Amused Launch a Conference Website in Just Weeks

Business of Pain – Conference

Guest post by Violette Calhoun of Easily Amused, a creative agency.

When a client asks you for a complicated site on a limited budget—and with a tight timeline— you might initially groan inside. Your first question is likely: can I find a quality solution that works within the client’s time and budget constraints?
Our team faced a similar challenge, and we were pleasantly impressed with how smoothly things went using Event Espresso for a recent conference website. Event Espresso helps create websites with ticket booking functionality—and gets the project launched quickly. Here’s a quick overview of our (highly positive) experience.

Challenge: Create a Beautiful, Reusable & Robust Site—On a Budget

A leading pain management group, National Spine & Pain Centers (NSPC), approached our team to create a digital presence for their annual conference. Every year, they host a pain management event called The Business of Pain Medicine. NSPC knew their conference would be an ongoing annual event, so they wanted a website they could launch quickly, then reuse for future conferences.
The deadline for launch was tight, and the budget was limited. So how could we deliver a solution to meet NSPC’s requirements—yet not be overkill?
Our team at Easily Amused aims to treat every client as an individual. So we carefully considered the unique needs of the NSPC project, and we planned the website to fit. This included using tools that were robust yet affordable, including Event Espresso.

How We Delivered a Strategic Solution

Theme Selection

To accomplish the design goals, there was not budget or time for a custom theme. Instead, we researched aesthetically pleasing and well-reviewed themes that would fit the client’s needs. We decided that Conference by WPLook Studio was our best bet to accomplish their goals. The theme is visually compelling and educational.
By using an off-the-shelf theme, we saved on design time. This left us more budget to focus on configuring Event Espresso perfectly—an area of higher importance. It also gave us additional time to help with another area of need: setting up social media for the conference.

Event Espresso Integration

The event management website needed to easily allow multiple groups of attendees to register for the conference. It needed to showcase medical speakers, display schedules, and provide event location info.

The site was also going to manage ticket sales, manage coupon codes for various groups, and play a role in helping the marketing team before the event. Using Event Espresso, the management team could smoothly organize ticket coupon promotions leading up to the event—without needing to continually go back to a developer for assistance.

At the day of the actual event, the Event Espresso portion of the website helped to manage check-in at the event. It also played a major role in accounting for the event—as it provides valuable reporting that helped the organizers.

Our client needed to start selling tickets in a few short weeks. And we delivered a website with the functionality they needed. A win for everyone.

The Easily Amused team created an event management website to fit the client’s budget & show off the opportunity for learning at their annual conference. Event Espresso was a tool that helped make this possible!

Future Use of Website

The Business of Pain Conference website is a tool that can be used over and over again. Next year, the client can use the same plugins and theme to manage new ticket sales. The site will function as an archive of events for past years, while serving as a valuable ongoing promotional tool.
Because we implemented everything in the easy-to-use content management system (CMS) with WordPress and Event Espresso, their staff is able to regularly make updates and manage the events on their own.
Thanks to great tools like Event Espresso, our client gets an easy-to-manage ticketing system—and this keeps them coming back to us for future projects!

In Summary

Our deadline was tight, and the budget was limited, but thanks to great tools—we delivered for our client. This led to a positive recommendation from our client, and our development team is excited to continue using Event Espresso in future projects.
Don’t take our word for it, here’s what our client had to say:

Working with [the Easily Amused team] was a great experience…They made the process so easy. The group was always receptive to my many questions and willing to hop on a conference call to sort through any confusion I had. They simplified the process for me, gave accurate clear timelines, and met deadlines with ease. Highly recommend them for any project.” – National Spine & Pain Centers

Third-party Add-ons Directory Launched

third-part-addonsGreat News! We’ve recently launched a new Third-party Add-ons directory on our website. So now Event Espresso 4 customers can explore an ever growing selection of plugins, and themes from third-party developers.

TL;DR

Be sure to check out the new Third-party Add-ons directory! If you’re a developer, the EE4 Github repo is now public, be sure to submit your add-ons.

Short Backstory About Our Event Ticketing & Registration Framework

As we were building out the Event Espresso 4 core event ticketing and registration framework for WordPress, we took extra time to make sure it was as extendable, and scalable as possible. With many hours of  very careful planning, and development, we were able to build in hundreds of action hooks, and filters throughout the core Event Espresso 4 codebase. Therefore exposing an enormous amount of data, and WordPress accessible endpoints throughout the EE4 framework. Leaving Event Espresso 4 wide open for developers to build great new extensions, and features on top of.

Exciting, right?

Get Noticed!
Developers submit your add-ons to our Third-party Add-ons Directory.

The Directory

Well, as time progressed, we started seeing more and more developers getting involved, and asking about promoting their theme’s, and/or plugins somewhere on the Event Espresso website. However, we didn’t really have a place for developers to promote their new extensions. So, I went ahead and built a small directory for third-party developer’s to promote their add-ons.

The add-on directory has actually been available for a while, but I got busy with WordPress security updates, testing and documenting new features (Multiple Event Registration and Promotions), and never got around to telling anyone about it, until now.

What add-ons are we launching with?

So far I’ve added three popular themes, two gateways, and a plugin integration.

Also, it’s TOO EARLY to promise anything right now, but it sounds like there might be an integration with a popular affiliate plugin, and maybe even a redesigned calendar widget. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for new stuff from other third-party developers.

Is Your Theme Ready for When Google Changes their Mobile Search Algorithm?

Twenty Fourteen Mobile-Friendly Theme with Event Espresso

Twenty Fourteen Theme

In order to sell tickets and collect registrations online, it is important that your website is easy for anyone to access and use. Google is changing their mobile search results algorithms to rank websites higher that give readers easier access to read and interact with their websites. Is your website ready?

When and HOW is Google changing its mobile ranking algorithm?

On April 21, Google is expanding their use of “mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal”. When this is implemented, worldwide, if you search for something on a mobile device today, then search again on April 21, the list of search results may change depending on if the websites among the search results are ‘mobile-friendly”.

Depending on the type of events you organize, industry and audience, 60% or more of your registrations may come by those using a mobile device (phone or tablet). The number of people using mobile devices is growing fast. So regardless of whether someone is using a desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone, you want your audience to be able to find your events and buy tickets.

If the websites for those search results are not “mobile-friendly”, that website will be penalized and will not appear as early in the search results. However, this does not apply to searches done via a desktop device.

Could this be you?

Is Your Website Theme Mobile-Friendly?

mobile-friendly-test

If you’re using WordPress, then you must evaluate whether you are using a theme that is “mobile-friendly”. Mobile-friendly can mean several things, but I want to describe it in two ways: Accessibility and Ease of Use.

You can use Google’s “Mobile-Friendly” test tool to see if your website will be impacted in their algorithm change or not. This tool gives you more of a pass/fail rating, but offers suggestions for improvement.

If your website/theme is not mobile-friendly we recommend doing two things:

  • Modify your current theme to better accommodate mobile devices. If you need assistance with your theme, we recommend you contact a Event Espresso Pro for help.
  • Consider using a different theme. There are many free themes that are available from wordpress.org that are mobile-friendly.

Accessibility

Can people access at all the information on your web pages without it being too cumbersome? Is there information that is hidden behind tables or images or divs, is there media (video, audio, etc.) that does not play on mobile devices?

In order to attract customers, you want to review whether the information you publish is accessible. The more people that can access your websites, the more people are likely to attend, and the more successful we can all be.

Web accessibility is not going away, and requires on-going, conscious, effort and investment.

Ease of Use – Compromises are Required

Determining if your website is mobile friendly should also consider how easy it is to use. The easier to use, the better it will convert visitors into customers.

However, because the screen is small, you will have to compromise. You cannot expect the desktop and mobile-views to be exactly the same. It’s important to prioritize your design so that you present the most important information and functionality first, and the less-important items further down the page.

Is Event Espresso 4 mobile-friendly?

In general, Event Espresso 4 adopts the layout as dictated by your theme’s blog archive template. So, if your Event Espresso pages are not passing Google’s “Mobile-Friendly” test tool, it will be because of your theme OR a plugin causing trouble . I’ve tested over two dozen free themes with Event Espresso and they all passed as “mobile-friendly”. That doesn’t mean that some of the Event Espresso elements can’t be improved to be easier to use, but they are passing the “mobile-friendly” test so you will not be penalized because of Event Espresso. If you have specific suggestions for improving how Event Espresso responds to mobile devices, please let us know.
