Selective event registration

I am looking for the best method to allow selective registration for events. I have searched and found a few things, so I am hoping to try and confirm things or have new ideas.

Password would be simplest, but since I am using ee4, I realise that isn’t possible.

I need selected people to be able to enter the events, people I can contact before hand via email.
There is the WP User integration, but then I would need to either manually add everyone as users (too time consuming), or allow anyone to to register on the site – but then could anyone register and then enter?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Matt,

You can set a password on an event:

Hi Matt,

You could set the events as waitlist events.

You do this within the Event Editor, setting the ‘Event Status’ to waitlist – http://take.ms/0YuZZ

Waitlist events are basically exactly the same as standard events however they do not display on the front end view, such as the calendar and the event list pages but you can view the event using the URL (use either the Short or Full URL buttons on the event editor page)

You can then email the URL to the attendee you wish to provide this event for.

Does that help?

Tony, that would be a good first step.
It might be abused with people sharing the URL though.

Could I then setup admin approval?
These would also have a promo code, making a paid event free.

Does the admin approval work in that case?

That’s true, although the same can be said for Password events, if they share the password.

You can use Pre-approval in this case, however, because the event becomes free with the discounts the attendee status will be updated to Complete before the Pre-Approval process.

The attendee will not receive the confirmation (depending on the “Send registration confirmation emails before payment is received?” setting within General Settings) until approved but they will apply to the attendee list (as the status is complete)

You will need to create a custom confirmation email within the Email Manager, then select that email to send when Approving the attendee otherwise they will recieve a Payment Reminder for the event when you approve.

True about the password – although that it would prevent people “finding” the url.

I am probably taking this too seriously for what it is. I will try it first with the waitlist.

To be clear, I can set up an event as a “waitlist” event, then when I am ready for general admission, I can change it to “open” and then it becomes available for anyone to book – but I still retain all those who booked when it was as a “waitlist” ?

Yes, a waitlist event is exactly the same as a ‘normal’ event, just with the status set as waitlist (which the front end queries are setup to exclude)

You can then change the status to Public for the event to be viewed on the front-end.
