Creating teams and inviting people to join

I’m not sure if EE can do this as it’s probably a bit beyond the remit – but here goes.

I’m looking to create an event in which teams of six can compete.

Could someone create a team in EE, with six members, and then ask others to join through EE (so they get an email asking them to sign up)?

It *might* be doable with custom development but it’s beyond the default plugins capabilities.
